Cambridge, 16 June 2010 Higher efficiency and increased utilization through standardsForeword by David Kerr „The success of any activity which aims at optimizing the supply chain is directly related to the utilization of the technologies: Only if the technologies which are being introduced are also used regularly and become an integral part of the daily business of hospitals and suppliers, can true cost savings be realized. GHX is convinced that the standardization of data will have a significant impact on the simplification and efficiency of processes along the entire supply chain. This is why we actively support the adoption of GS1 standards within the healthcare sector. If all participants apply the proposed standards, this can set the stage for an increase of electronic order volume and subsequently, increased cost savings. In the future GHX will work even with GS1 and other standardization bodies in order to support the healthcare sector by improving its supply chain efficiencies.“ Supply Chain Excellence at Leeds Teaching HospitalsAt the European Supply Chain Excellence Awards 2009, the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust won the coveted Supply Chain Excellence Award in the category „Public Sector, Services & Utilities“. Chris Slater, Head of Supplies, and Graham Medwell, e-Business Manager, accepted the award on behalf of Leeds Teaching Hospitals. The team at Leeds successfully applies e-Enablement standards such as GS1 and NHS eClass as well as tools such as the GHX Nexus catalogue and data management module. GHX Powergate comes into effect for Leeds’ inventory management and all e-commerce activities are run via the GHX Exchange. Pioneering work with major suppliers such as Johnson&Johnson and Covidien has led to a 100% accuracy of all catalogues in use at the Trust. One of the judges of the European Supply Chain Excellence Awards stated: „This approach is absolutely sector changing.“ GHX is delighted that our products are contributing to better efficiency and a reduction of costs in hospital organisations, subsequently leading to improved patient care. Congratulations to the Leeds Teaching hospitals for this well-deserved recognition! GHX celebrates 10th anniversaryTen years ago, executives at five leading healthcare manufacturers—Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Systems, GE Healthcare, Baxter, Abbott and Medtronic—announced the formation of GHX. “There were dozens of startups, each claiming to be uniquely positioned to help recapture the billions of dollars of waste in the healthcare supply chain identified by the 1996 Efficient Healthcare Consumer Response study” says GHX Chief Executive Officer Bruce Johnson. The difference between GHX and many of the young start-up companies was the recognition by leaders of the founding companies that success required more than just the promise of the Internet, and would need to be shared across the industry. This kind of effort required a new business model, one that brought not only competitors to the table, but also representatives from every facet of the supply chain and a commitment to providing benefit and savings for all involved. The evolution resulted in the formation of the healthcare industry’s first global independent trading exchange—GHX. More than 11,000 healthcare provider facilities and 4,700 medical-surgical supplier divisions in North America, and an additional 1,000 providers and 300 suppliers in Europe, transact business using GHX. GHX customers save money by connecting to the open and neutral GHX trading exchange to do business with multiple trading partners and using complementary software solutions to improve efficiencies and provide visibility to more accurate and timely data to improve processes, financial performance and, ultimately, patient care. Healthcare Value Chain DayIn January, GHX attended the Healthcare Value Chain Day in Bern, Switzerland, as a partner. In Switzerland, new regulations for a standardisation of health insurance fees will come into effect in 2012. This change is expected to foster increasing competition of the hospitals. At the same time, this is regarded as an added incentive to take a closer look at the cost efficiency of the supply processes, both on the hospital as well as the supplier side. Dr. Jürgen Holm, lecturer at the University of Applied Science in Bern, conducted a survey under the headline „Purchasing and hospital logistics“, which evaluated 40 Swiss hospitals. Through the survey it became evident that Swiss providers are not all equally well prepared for the challenges of the upcoming changes in health insurance law. Compared with industrial enterprises, the processes, methods and procedures in purchasing, inventory management and logistics in Swiss hospitals are often underdeveloped and lack efficiency. One remarkable result of the survey is the fact that all hospitals who have placed a strong focus on clean master data seem to belong to the group of hospitals well prepared for the challenges ahead. Frank Brueggemann, managing director for GHX in Switzerland and one of the speakers at the Healthcare Value Chain Day, stressed: „Accurate data are at the root of success of economic processes in any healthcare organisation.“ GHX supports its customers with the validation of master data and the classification according to standards such as eCl@ss. Partnering with GHXPartnership with GHX will ultimately drive a reduction in operational costs on both sides of the supply chain as it allows you to trade efficiently with organisations that co-operate with us on supply chain improvements and initiatives. You'll have the tools and resources to automate processes through a single connection to your business partners. Our Goal is our committment to advancing the business of healthcare, leading to improved patient care worldwide. |
